Teatro Paraguas will present a performance of bilingual interactive cuentos (or traditional folk tales) for
kids of all ages at all three Santa Fe Public Library Branches on Friday, April 11, 2014 and Saturday,
April 12, 2014.
JoJo Sena de Tarnoff directs a cast of actors ages 8-62 in Cuentos al Lado del Rio(Stories by the Side of the River). The program includes two cuentos: Los Cuatro Amigos Musicos de Belen (The Four Musical Friends of Belen) and Encaje y Espuma (Lace and Foam).
Los Cuatros Amigos Musicos de Belen is a classical European story brought to the New World and preserved by the early Spanish colonists in New Mexico. A tired old donkey, an aged dog, an old cat, and a sad old rooster who can't help but crow at odd times in the day band together after their masters throw them out, and form a musical quartet. They decide to sing for their supper at a house owned by thieves, and mayhem pursues. The story is classically set in Bremen, but Belen, New Mexico is a fine location as well.
Encaje y Espuma is the story of two sisters who live together. Encaje is kind and generous, and Espuma is mean-spirited and stingy. Encaje decides to visit their old widower father after the harvest, and takes him a loaf of bread. Along the way she has marvelous experiences with el Albaricoquero (apricot tree), el Algodon (cottonwood tree), el Fuego (fire), and el Rito (little river). Her father is very happy to see her, and gives her a lot of presents. When Espuma hears of Encaje's wonderful adventure, she sets out herself to visit their father, but has a very different experience. Between the two cuentos, JoJo Sena de Tarnoff sings a number of well-known New Mexican folk songs. Jeni Nelson narrates, Alexandra Hudson plays Encaje, and Esme Rodriguez plays Espuma. The youngs actors include Luca Martini, Guinevere Phelps, Greg Maestas, Amaya Smith, who play the four musicians in Los Cuatro Amigos and the characters visited by the sisters in Espuma y Encage.
Cuentos al Lado del Rio is the third program presented by Teatro Paraguas at the Public Libraries. Last Ocober, TP presented Grandpa Lolo's Navajo Saddle Blanket, a story written by noted oral historian and author Nasario Garcia. In April 2013 TP presented two cuentos: ''El Dia que Nevo Tortillas (The Day it Snowed Tortillas), and La Cuelbra Ingrata'' (The Ungrateful Snake).
Teatro Paraguas presents the program at the La Farge Branch (1730 Llano St) on Friday, April 11 at 4:00 pm, at the Downtown Branch (145 Washington Ave.) on Saturday April 12 at 10:30 am, and at the Southside Branch (6599 Jaguar Drive) on Saturday April 12 at 2:30 pm. The performances are sponsored by The Friends of Santa Fe Public Library and are free for the public.
