Written and directed by Angelo Jaramillo (author of The Darker: Tales of a City Different and Psalms of Anarchy, published by Sunstone Press of Santa Fe, NM), “Shortes” is the first compilation in a series of shorts produced by Teatro Paraguas. The three short plays explore the stories of three Latino individuals struggling to live in the newly wrecked economy.

The Dish Washer highlights the ups and downs of a hard worker coming to terms with his meaningless job. Filled with song, dance, and sorrow, it is the perfect rendition of the unappreciated Mexicano dish washer throughout the bourgeois restaurant scene of pinche Santa Fe.

La Sirvienta shows the frustration and despair of an educated professional from Mexico who is now forced to clean houses for a living. It is another quintessential example of the tragic “American Dream” socio-psychological complex.

Of The Divided Heart follows the inner experience of a young Latina on the verge of suicide. In the United States, the suicide rate of young Latina women is the highest amongst all teenage kids. These young individuals struggle with many social and emotional obstacles trying to negotiate the trauma of a 21st Century world in a hostile foreign land. Because of social pressures such as forced assimilation, lack of education, a conservative tradition, patriarchal sexism, and everyday adolescent peer pressure, many of these young ladies attempt to take their lives typically through the use of prescription drugs and/or cutting.

Teatro Paraguas is the only bi-lingual theatre company operating in Northern New Mexico. Teatro Paraguas has produced over fifteen shows in the past few years showcasing the talents and diversity of Latino/Hispanic artists across the globe.
